New Forest Discovery Walk (Lymington)
Exploring the habitats, wildlife and history of the New Forest
Service Description
Our walk will follow the Lymington River and seawall around Normandy Marsh, offering panoramic views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, Hurst Castle, and The Needles. On the return route via the "ancient highway" and Normandy Lane, we’ll have ample opportunities to uncover the rich history of these marshlands. The Lymington-Keyhaven Marshes are nationally renowned for their diverse wildlife, presenting close-up views of a wide variety of bird species as well as unique flora and fauna. Every visit to this coastal area brings new surprises, with breathtaking views and chances for memorable wildlife encounters. We’ll also delve into the fascinating history of the marshes, from their origins in the Iron Age to the heyday of the salt industry and the area’s strategic role during World War II. Stories of smuggling, imprisoned kings, and past invasions bring this area’s past to life. This 8 km walk will proceed at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time to take in the scenery and spot wildlife. We’ll pause for a snack break midway; guests are welcome to bring a packed lunch, and we’re happy to recommend local options for a delicious, locally sourced meal. Our meeting point is accessible via public transport (Bluestar Bus No. 6, nearest stop Lymington High Street; rail, nearest stop Lymington Town) and within easy walking distance of Lymington town. We encourage guests to use sustainable travel options whenever possible—bike racks are available at the Bath Road car park meeting point.
