New Forest Discovery Walk (Lyndhurst)
Exploring the habitats, wildlife and history of the New Forest
Service Description
Starting at the iconic Bolton’s Bench, our walk follows "The Ridge," offering panoramic views over classic New Forest heathlands, mired landscapes, and distant woodlands. We’ll then enter the ancient Denny Inclosure, passing through a variety of woodland habitats, and eventually return via the working coppice woodland of Pondhead Inclosure. Our focus will be on the diverse wildlife we may encounter along the way, from the iconic Dartford Warbler and elusive Fallow Deer to ancient Beech and Oak trees. We’ll also have the opportunity to spot an array of wildflowers, fungi, butterflies, and other invertebrates. As we explore, we’ll discuss the ancient practice of commoning, which has shaped the landscape over centuries. We’ll look closely at the vital role that ponies and cattle have played in managing the land we see today. In addition, we’ll delve into the Forest’s layered history, from remnants of the medieval Parc Pale to the World War II bombing range—revealing the Forest’s important place in Britain’s past. The walk covers approximately 8 km at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the surroundings and discover any wildlife we may encounter. We’ll pause for a snack break midway, and guests are welcome to bring a packed lunch (we’re happy to recommend local spots offering tasty, locally sourced options). Our meeting point is accessible by public transport (Bluestar Bus No. 6, with the nearest stop at Lyndhurst Fire Station) and is within walking distance of Lyndhurst. We encourage guests to use sustainable travel options, and cyclists can leave their bikes in Lyndhurst.
